BIACS 3 — The Artists

The third edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville will gather more than 150 artists from all over the world in Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada. BIACS 3, to be held from 2 October 2008 to 11 January 2009, will adopt the title “Youniverse” — referring to the interactivity of each individual with the universe.

According to the overview presented by the team appointed to plan the contents ¾ Peter Weibel, general director of the ZKM Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Wonil Rhee, Korean curator, and Marie-Ange Brayer, director of FRAC Centre Regional Contemporary Art of Orleáns ¾ the forthcoming biennial will revolve around the connections between art, science, technology, architecture and the environment, within the global context of the information and communication society.

“The tendency at present is to democratize the use of technology; from personal computers and mobile phones to faucets and light switches, new technologies allow the user to adapt the environment to his needs, anytime, anywhere,” said Weibel.

The Biacs3 will feature four main sections:

The first one will offer a retrospective of the pivotal works of media art and will be curated by Peter Weibel.

The second part will show the latest tendencies in media art, net art and multimedia and will be based on the interaction with the viewer through the works of twenty artists selected by Wonil Rhee.

Architecture’s transformation through computer technology will be the topic of the third section, curated by Marie-Ange Brayer, which will display 45 works created by architects following three conceptual areas: Flux City, Bio Body and Design Yourself.

Finally, the fourth branch, which will be located between the main venue, the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) and other peculiar sites around Seville, will deal with the archeology and the origins of science and technology in Andalusia.
