It would seem curators Jens Hoffmann and Harrell Fletcher have conceived yet one more biennial to contribute to the art world. The People’s Biennial, as it has been named, grounds itself in the very fact that it is not for the art world however. The new biennial, opening in September of 2010, sets out to present the works of five different artists in five institutions that are located outside mainstream art centers. Hoffmann and Harrell will visit the communities of each institution and select artists and works for that increment of the biennial.
The People’s Biennial states that it is “a response to several critical issues within the often-isolated world of art. Prominent among these is the fact that many biennial exhibitions in the United States focus primarily on art from just a few cities, usually New York and Los Angeles and sometimes Chicago, Miami, and San Francisco.”
